The Sugarplastic
Resin
(Escape Artist)
The Sugarplastic's last album, Bang! The World Is Round, presented a whiptight trio recorded with few instrumental overdubs, and part of its charm was the way songwriter and guitarist Ben Eshbach filled the sonic spaces by using the entire range of his guitar. Resin presents more overdubs and hence a broader sound, but Eshbach's considerable arranging skills are still powerfully in evidence. The band downplays its well-noted influences (even though "Holy Moses" quotes directly from the Kinks' "Big Black Smoke") in favor of developing its own eccentric but charming voice. Featuring quirky lyrics and catchy tunes with unexpected left turns in harmony and texture, the songs here might be top-ten hits in a world drawn by Monty Python's Terry Gilliam.
