The Frank and Walters - 'Glass', 2 October 2000
When The Frank And Walters first appeared on the scene with happy go lucky numbers like Happy Busman and Walter's Trip, it was difficult not to adore them. Even though, for every part of you that thought they were brilliant, another part of you knew they were also quite atrocious; their simplistic approach to writing songs, and nearly out of tune vocals were much to do with what gave them their appeal.
So when Glass beeps its way in with the eighties electronica of Underground it's difficult to believe that this is the same band, because although they've always been kind of cheesy, the big thumping beat, that would be the perfect partner to a Cher track, is unacceptable. For those of you who have a special little corner of your heart reserved for The Franks it will be an upsetting moment, especially considering had the song been done in their normal style it would be just fine. Isn't It Time suffers exactly the same fate, and it's not until New York that the band of old start to raise their Irish smiles. There are some attractive melodies going down on Glass, Ancestors is lovely, and these are almost worth the bad moments, but it's all a bit hit and miss. Hopefully the band will return to their roots very soon.
